not only…but also應連接兩個相對稱的並列成分。not only but also該句式連接兩個分句，並且not only/until位於句首時，第一個分句中的主語和謂語要部分倒裝。該詞着重強調後者。它的意思是“不僅 … 而且 ...”；其中的also有時可以省略。
not only but also是就近原則。“not only … but also …”是一個並列連詞詞組,其意思基本等於“both … and …”,但側重點放在“but also”上,另外該詞組使用時須遵守一定的規則,如要求對稱,倒裝及主謂一致等。
